WHY PAINTING MATTERS

YOUR BUILDING FACES A LOT.

PAINT KEEPS IT PROTECTED.

Understanding why painting matters helps you make smarter decisions for your property.
Sun with rays reflecting off a surface
UV RADIATION:

The sun breaks down paint molecules, causing fading, chalking and loss of surface protection.

Water droplet with impact lines penetrating a surface
WATER EXPOSURE:
Rain penetrates tiny cracks and joints, leading to mould, corrosion and concrete spalling.
Factory emitting particles settling onto a surface
POLLUTION & SALT
Coastal salt air and urban pollution deposit on surfaces, accelerating coating breakdown and causing permanent staining.
Thermometer with up and down arrows
TEMPERATURE CHANGE:
Expansion and contraction cycles cause cracks and paint movement, opening gaps over time.
Plant taking root and spreading through a surface
ORGANIC GROWTH:
Algae, mould and lichen hold moisture against surfaces and actively damage coatings beneath them.

WHAT NEGLECT LOOKS LIKE

THESE ARE THE SIGNS

YOUR PAINT IS FAILING.

These are the visible signs that your paint system needs attention.
Faded paint from UV exposure.

FADING & CHALKING

Colour loss and a chalky powder on the surface when touched. UV has broken down the topcoat binder.

Painted wall with paint blistered and peeled away exposing patchy substrate beneath

PEELING & FLAKING

Paint lifting away from the substrate in sheets or flakes. Adhesion has failed completely.

Corroding steel reinforcement bar exposed along the edge of a concrete balcony slab

CRACKING & CRAZING

Fine network of cracks across the paint film. The coating can no longer flex with the substrate beneath it.

Water stains on ceiling showing signs of water ingress

WATER MARKS & STAINING

Damp patches, rust staining from fixings, or tide marks on the surface. Water is getting in.

Underside of a balcony slab with heavy staining, biological growth and edge spalling

MOULD & ORGANIC GROWTH

Black, green or brown discolouration on the paint surface. Moisture is trapped and the coating is degrading.

"The team at Upkeep did a great job on a tough site in the middle of Coogee. Nick and the teams management of public safety was outstanding. I would definitely recommend them and will get then back on out next project."
John Currenti
"Highly recommend Upkeep's Painters!! Nick, Jesmond and team were very professional, kept us up to date on where our job was at with weeks of terrible weather and did a fantastic job repointing our roof and colour! House looks incredible and we couldn’t be happier! We recommend Upkeep for anyone looking for roof services!"
Bel K
"Nicholas and the Upkeep team were absolutely fantastic on our job in Turramurra. There was a reasonable level of complexity with a steep roof and gabled windows meaning they needed to rope up to get the painting done. All the lads were highhly professional and kept us informed throughout, we're a repeat customer and will use them again when needed. With appreciation."
Andrew Beer
"Jesmond is super honest, reliable and takes pride in his work. Excellent service and attention to detail. Our job was made tricky due to a slate roof and Upkeep took great care setting up access. Paint job was great with excellent attention to detail and a perfect colour match. Highly recommend."

FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS

How often should a building be repainted?

We recommend repainting every 7–10 years for most exterior surfaces. Coastal properties and high-exposure facades may need attention sooner. An inspection will give you a clear answer for your specific building.

How long does a typical painting project take?

Every job is different. Scope, access requirements, surface condition and building size all affect the timeline. An on-site assessment gives you a clear picture of what's involved and a confirmed schedule before any work begins.

Do you repair surfaces before painting?

Yes — always. Cracks, spalling, failed sealants and surface defects are addressed before any coating is applied. Painting over an unsound surface is not something we do.

Are your teams certified for height work?

All rope access technicians hold current IRATA or SPRAT certification — the global standard for rope access. All height work complies with AS/NZS 4488 and relevant WHS legislation.

What makes you different?

We inspect before we quote, specify the right system for your building rather than the cheapest option, and every job ends with a written report and photos. You have a record. Your building has a history. We aim to do it right while working within your budget.

What type of paint do you use?

We are Dulux Accredited and primarily specify Dulux premium coating systems. Where required or requested, we also work with other leading Australian brands including Solver, Haymes and Taubmans. Every system is specified to match the substrate type, exposure level and performance requirements of your building — never by margin.

Which Sydney areas do you cover?

We service the Eastern Suburbs, Northern Beaches, North Shore, Inner West and Sydney CBD. Contact us to confirm availability in your area.

Can you paint while the building is occupied?

Yes. We plan all works around building occupancy and coordinate with strata managers to minimise disruption to residents and tenants.

What if weather delays the job?

Weather delays are factored into our scheduling. We do not apply coatings in conditions that compromise adhesion or finish quality. Any delays are communicated promptly.

What certifications do you hold?

Our team holds a broad range of certifications and licences across the business including IRATA and SPRAT rope access qualifications, public liability and workers compensation insurance, First Aid, Police Checks, Working with Children, Height Safety System Installation and Testing, EWP over 11m, Asbestos Awareness, Confined Spaces, and Painting and Decorating trade qualifications. Every job is staffed with the right people for the scope of work.
